AI Captains Academy review

What it is

AI Captains Academy is Jordan Urbs' paid Skool community for solo business builders who are not developers and want AI to actually run parts of their business. The pitch is blunt about what free content does not give you: order, feedback, and people to think with. So the room is built around a sequenced curriculum, two live calls a week, weekly co-working, and the goal of shipping one real thing you chose within your first 90 days. It is a small, private room, around 95 members at the time of writing, priced at $83/month or $497/year with a 7-day free trial.

The technical spine is Claude Code plus open agent tooling (OpenClaw, Agent Zero, n8n), taught with an explicit no-vendor-lock-in stance: own your agents, swap your models.

Who teaches it

Jordan Urbs runs it solo as the founder and main instructor, publishing on YouTube (@jordanurbsai) and X, with the academy operating as AI Captains LLC. His teaching angle is the one thing most AI communities skip: he starts people at the terminal and a real code editor before touching agents, on the theory that the tools will change but the fundamentals will not. Members repeatedly describe that as the unlock, opening a terminal for the first time and then deploying a site the same week. He also sells 1:1 implementation calls, so the founder is reachable, which is what a 95-member room can offer and a 300,000-member one cannot.

What is inside

The classroom is a numbered path rather than a content dump, with roughly 8 modules and intensives:

• Module 0: AI Tools Quickstart (4 to 6 hrs), browser AI to local models to real agents, providers and API keys, ship something to the internet
• Module 1: AI Agents & Automation (10 hrs), open-source agents, voice prompting, n8n backends, MCPs, context engineering, multi-agent work
• Module 2: Your Business Brain (8 to 12 hrs), the strategy layer
• Module 2.5: The Agent Lab (6 to 8 hrs), deeper context engineering and agent hygiene
• Module 3: Knowledge Infrastructure (8 to 12 hrs), building a knowledge base your agents can actually use
• Module 4: Code by Conversation (8 to 12 hrs), building software by directing AI
• Intensives: a 5-day Command Line Bootcamp and a 30-day Content Commander Challenge
• The Armory: 12-plus prebuilt agentic systems ("rigs") included from the entry tier, with new ones added monthly, covering funnels, content repurposing, research swarms and an AEO audit

Live access is the other half: two community calls or Q&As a week plus weekly hands-on co-working where members bring real work.

How it compares

• AI Captains Academy vs Claude Code Club: Claude Code Club is far cheaper ($9/month) and much bigger (around 6,800 members), but it is a beginner roadmap for the tool itself. AI Captains costs roughly nine times more and buys sequence, live feedback and the business systems layer around the tool.

Who it is for

Solo business builders, consultants and creators who are already using AI daily, have watched plenty of free content, and still have half-finished automations and no system. Specifically useful if you have never opened a terminal and want to be walked through it without being condescended to.

Who should skip it

Skip it if you want a large peer network: at around 95 members this is a small room, and the feed will not carry you if you go quiet. Skip it if you are cost-sensitive and self-directed, because free libraries cover much of the same ground. Skip it if you already ship software, since Module 0 and the Command Line Bootcamp will be beneath you. And know that some lesson tooling has aged (Roo Code is retired, and the founder says he no longer uses n8n himself), which he calls out in the community: the tools are the exercise, not the lesson, but you should expect to be learning the pattern rather than following a click-by-click script.

Pricing, and the one rule

Silver is $83/month or $497/year and includes every course, the full Armory, the Command Line Bootcamp, weekly co-working, and two live calls a week. There is a 7-day free trial, described as seven days inside the community rather than a content preview, plus a no-questions refund. Above that sit Gold ($2,999/year, done-with-you 1:1 guidance) and Platinum ($19,999/year, done-for-you builds), so plan for an upsell path.

The one rule: use the free entry points first. The 5-Day Command Line Bootcamp and AI Foundations Sprint cost nothing, and they tell you within a week whether this teaching style fits you. Then use the trial week on live calls, not on binge-watching Module 0.

First-look verdict

The most credible thing about AI Captains Academy is what it teaches first. Almost every AI community starts you at the prompt; this one starts you at the terminal, then builds up to agents, a knowledge base and code by conversation, which is the order that actually compounds for a non-developer. The honest counterweight is scale and price: $83/month for a 95-member room means you are paying for the founder's attention and the live calls, not for a network. If you will show up twice a week, that is a fair trade. If you will not, a cheaper room like Claude Code Club or a free blueprint library will serve you better. Compare it against the rest of the best Claude Code communities before deciding.
